West MacDonnell Ranges

About West MacDonnell National Park

Known as Tjoritja by the Traditional Owners, the East and West MacDonnell Ranges continues to have a deep significance for the local Arrernte Aboriginal culture.

Established in 1984 to protect the natural sites along the range and its residents, the West MacDonnell National Park features stunning sceneries including gorges, waterholes and gaps, all within a couple of hours’ drive from Alice Springs. The ‘West Macs’ range is a 644 km long series of mountains located in the centre of Australia, including the iconic Larapinta Trail, a long-distance bush walking trail of 223 km along the backbone of the range.
